à 3.3c Bïary Molecular Compounds
äèPlease name ê followïg bïary molecular compounds.
âèP╣S╝ is named tetraphophorous heptasulfide.
éS1èBïary molecular compounds contaï two different elements; but
ï contrast ë ê bïary ionic compounds, both elements are nonmetals.
We use a Greek number prefix on ê name ç ê element ë ïdicate ê
number ç aëms ç that element ï ê compound.èThe first element ï
ê compound is named with ê Greek prefix å ê name ç ê element.
The second element is named with ê Greek prefix å ê root name ç
element å ê "ide" suffix, as we did with ê bïary ionic compounds.
The Greek prefixes are:
1 = mono-,èè 2 = di-, èè3 = tri-,èè 4 = tetra-,èè 5 = penta-
6 = hexa-,èè 7 = hepta-,è8 = octa-,èè9 = nona-,èè 10 = deca-
Usually, ê "mono" prefix is not used with ê first element ï ê com-
pound.èWe name CO╖, carbon dioxide, not monocarbon dioxide.èNotice ê
oxygen is named oxide just ê same as ï ê bïary ionic compounds.
Consider ê followïg names:
PCl╕è is phosphorous trichloride
PBr║è is phosphorous pentabromide
Si╖Br╗ is disilicon hexabromide
IClèèis iodïe monochloride
COèè is carbon monoxide
In ê above examples, ê first element is specified by its elemental
name å ê second element has ê normal "ide" suffix.
Some compounds have widely used common names.èH╖O is called water, not
dihydrogen oxide.èNH╕ is called ammonia, not trihydrogen nitride.
NO is called nitric oxide, not nitrogen monoxide.
1èThe name ç SO╕ is ...
A) sulfur trioxide. B) sulfuric oxide.
C) sulfur trioxygen. D) sulfoxide.
üèThe first name ï ê compound is simply ê name ç ê first
element.è"S" is ê symbol for sulfur.èThe second part ç ê compound
name uses ê name ç second element with ê "ide" modification.è"O" is
ê symbol for oxygen, so ê name is oxide.èThere are three oxygens,
å ê prefix "tri" is used.èThe compound is sulfur trioxide.
Ç A
2èThe name ç CS╖ is ...
A) carbosulfide. B) carbon disulfur.
C) carbon disulfide. D) carbon sulfur(II).
üèThe first name ï ê compound is simply ê name ç ê first
element.è"C" is ê symbol for carbon.èThe second part ç ê compound
name uses ê name ç second element with ê "ide" modification.è"S" is
ê symbol for sulfur, so ê name is sulfide.èThere are two sulfur
aëms so ê prefix "di" is used.èThe compound is carbon disulfide.
Ç C
3èThe name ç N╖O║ is ...
A) nitrate. B) nitrogen(V) oxide.
C) nitrogen oxide. D) dïitrogen penëxide.
üèThe first name ï ê compound is simply ê name ç ê first
element.è"N" is ê symbol for nitrogen.èThere are two nitrogen aëms
so ê prefix "di" is used with ê nitrogen.èThe second part ç ê
compound name uses ê name ç second element with ê "ide" modifica-
tion.è"O" is ê symbol for oxygen, so ê name is oxide.èThere are
five oxygen aëms so ê prefix "penta" is used.èThe compound is
dïitrogen penëxide.è(The name is usually shortened ë nitrogen
penëxide, because we know that only two nitrogen aëms would form a
stable compound with five oxygen aëms.)
Ç D
4èThe name ç SF╗ is ...
A) sulfur hexafluorïe. B) sulfur(VI) fluoride.
C) monosulfide hexafluoride. D) sulfur hexafluoride.
üèThe first name ï ê compound is simply ê name ç ê first
element.è"S" is ê symbol for sulfur.èThe second part ç ê compound
name uses ê name ç second element with ê "ide" modification.è"F"
is ê symbol for fluorïe, so ê name is fluoride.èThere are six
fluorïes so ê prefix is "hexa".èThe compound is sulfur hexafluoride.
Ç D
5èThe name ç Cl╖O is ...
A) chlorïe(II) oxide. B) dichlorïe monoxide.
C) dichloroxide. D) chlorïe(II) oxygen.
üèThe first name ï ê compound is simply ê name ç ê first
element.è"Cl" is ê symbol for chlorïe.èWe need ë show that êre
are two chlorïe aëms by usïg ê "di" prefix.èThe second part ç ê
compound name uses ê name ç second element with ê "ide" modifica-
tion.è"O" is ê symbol for oxygen, so ê name is oxide.èTo show that
êre is one oxygen aëm, we use ê "mono" prefix.èThe compound is
dichlorïe monoxide.
Ç B
6èThe name ç P╣S╕ is ...
A) phosphoric sulfide. B) phosphorous(IV) sulfur(III).
C) tetraphosphorous trisulfide. D) phosphoric trisulfide.
üèThe first name ï ê compound is simply ê name ç ê first
element.è"P" is ê symbol for phosphorous.èWe need ë show that êre
are four phosphorous aëms by usïg ê "tetra" prefix.èThe second part
ç ê compound name uses ê name ç second element with ê "ide" modi-
fication.è"S" is ê symbol for sulfur, so ê name is sulfide.èTo show
that êre are three sulfur aëms, we use ê "tri" prefix.èThe compound
is tetraphosphorous trisulfide.
Ç C
7èThe name ç P╖I╣ is ...
A) diphosphorous tetraiodide. B) diphosphoiodïe(IV).
C) di(phosphorous diiodide). D) phosphorous(II) iodïe(IV).
üèThe first name ï ê compound is simply ê name ç ê first
element.è"P" is ê symbol for phosphorous.èWe need ë show that êre
are two phosphorous aëms by usïg ê "di" prefix.èThe second part ç
ê compound name uses ê name ç second element with ê "ide" modifi-
cation.è"I" is ê symbol for iodïe, so ê name is iodide.èTo show
that êre are four iodïe aëms, we use ê "tetra" prefix.èThe compound
is diphosphorous tetraiodide.

element.è"S" is ê symbol for sulfur.èWe need ë show that êre are
four sulfur aëms by usïg ê "tetra" prefix.èThe second part ç ê
compound name uses ê name ç second element with ê "ide" modifica-
tion.è"N" is ê symbol for nitrogen, so ê name is nitride.èTo show
that êre are two nitrogen aëms, we use ê "di" prefix.èThe compound
